Ins/Outs of Fashion Trends in 2023

OUT! Things I don’t want to see in 2023:

Backless suits

Timothee Chalamet wore a backless suit to Venice Film Festival and now the entire fashion industry is up in arms! It comes at a time in which Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele is pushing to have more gender fluidity in fashion (like putting Harry Styles on the cover of Vogue in a dress, iconic) so designers are now experimenting with more feminine tops on men all across New York Fashion Week. Let men wear dresses, let men show their skin! Do not let men wear normal black tie suits where the only stylistic difference is the back is cut out!

Kendall Jenner’s underwear

For some reason, the supermodel felt the need to wear a sweater on top and underwear with tights on the bottom. With pointy heels, no less. I feel like she just keeps wearing fewer and fewer clothes and it’s only a matter of time until she just goes completely pantless. Even my absolute icon Bella Hadid has hopped onto this trend. I’m all for short shorts and biker shorts when strolling around, downing a piece of pizza but I just feel like tighty whiteys are pushing it a bit, truly Captain Underwear core.

Bleached Eyebrows

This one is hard for me to type, mostly because I would love to pull out a bottle of bleach and do this to my own eyebrows just to come off as edgy and careless. I don’t think they look good though, and I don’t think they will look good on me. I don’t want to see this fashion trend in 2023 just because I cannot deal with any more temptation… Maybe I’ll just get a temporary box of blonde dye to live my bleached eyebrow moment.

Crocs

I don’t get why they’re coming back they are so ugly! I get that they are comfortable but there are so many other shoes that are just as comfortable. Even going barefoot into your local grocery store would be better in my opinion. This is one of those trends that started because people started wearing Crocs ironically to be funny, and then the masses decided to wear them unironically. I can get behind wearing Crocs ironically, but this is too much.

Pairing extreme athleisurewear with extreme glam

I’m not sure this is even a trend, but on my flight home from Madrid, I watched some of the new The Kardashian season and saw Kim Kardashian wearing her Skims biker shorts with extremely knee-high boots. I’m not exactly sure what the thought was behind this look as it is neither athletic nor glamorous. It gives off the same vibes as when I’m lounging on the couch and my mom asks me to come to help her bring in the groceries so I slip on whatever shoes I have lying around. I’m not sure who stood behind the camera and forced her to dress like this, but they should be punished harshly.

IN! Things I do want to see in 2023:

Cowboy boots

I’ve said it many times before, cowboy boots will be instilled into high-end fashion by Q3 2023. They can literally go with any outfit, trust me. They will make you look cool and chic and like you have such a good fashion sense and yet still be incredibly comfortable.

Overly baggy pants

I have a life philosophy that is, the baggier the pant the better. The other night I told my mom, “I hate it when men wear skinny jeans, I don’t want to know that men have bodies.” I feel the same way about my own pants, sometimes I just don’t want anyone to know that I have a body! Last month I got baggy jeans that are 2 sizes too big and altered the waist to stay up and this month I got pink baggy cargo pants. You can run around in them and the pockets are monstrous! Baggy until I die.

Platform shoes

Maybe this is just because I’m oddly short for my family, but I love the look and feel of platform shoes. I just found platform Mary Jane shoes at the thrift store and I’ve been wearing them everywhere even though it’s a bit too cold for them right now. They add something different to regular shoes.

Low-rise pants

Skirts, shorts, pants, bring the low rise back! I think low-rise jeans look so much cooler than high-rise jeans even when they’re normal, boring jeans just because they’re different. I’m a big fan of Y2K coming back into style (the good parts of Y2K, not the jeans underneath dresses) so of course I’m a major supporter of low rise. I’ve been slowly accumulating low rise over the years and now I will finally be in trend.

Denim on Denim

I’m not sure if this is actually an up-and-coming fashion trend or if it’s just a style that I’m obsessed with so the Internet has been feeding me pictures of it. Detailed denim skirts, long or short, cool denim jackets, denim purses. I will be decked out in denim in the coming months. Denim on denim on denim.

Yours truly,

Calihan
